Research Projects

The following research projects are part of TISRI’s ongoing programs, in addition to the one’s being carried out based on research contracts with various state and military organizations. The projects are undertaken by various TISRI departments and are receiving administrative and technical support from the institute’s Research Department.

Strategic Assessments of Target Countries:

Based on a pre defined pattern this project started in 2002. The first volume of strategic assessment of US, Egypt and Israel were published in the same year. The strategic assessment of Iraq was published in 2003. The territorial parts of the strategic assessment of Russia, Germany, Britain, France, China, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates have been completed. Political assessment of Russia and Britain are in their final stages of completion.
In addition, the territorial and political strategic assessments of Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Japan are complete and ready for publication. These strategic assessments include information on different aspects of the countries such as their territorial situation, natural topography, natural and mineral resources, social and administrative organizations, political hierarchy, top officials, constitution, security and intelligence apparatus, political parties, foreign policy, and vulnerabilities.

A Guide to World Research Institutes:

The project was initiated in 2002 and is intended to provide 12 categories of information on major research institutes throughout the world. The first phase of the project included data on 221 research institutions and was published as A Guide to World Research Institutes (2002). A more detailed plan has been adopted for the future guides. It involves a division of research centers into (1) those devoted to the study of strategic, international, political, and foreign relations issues; (2) state and regional institutions; (3) centers for the study of military, security, and intelligence issues; and (4) institutions for the study of religions and sects. The first issue of this new series will soon be published.

National Security of the Islamic Republic of Iran: Challenges, Threats and Opportunities

The project was approved in 2003 and aims to elaborate the opportunities and threats affecting the interests of the Islamic Republic of Iran at internal, regional, and international levels. The project focuses on the opportunities and threats in the context of external factors. The project was set in motion by a team of experts in May 2003 and comprises around 60 research headings. Up to now the scope of research has been defined, and the process of identification and selection of experts, and signing the contracts has been carried out, and contracts have been concluded. Some parts of the project are in their last stages of completion. Each part of the research work will be submitted to the Scientific Secretariat and will be subjected to evaluation by a group of experts before it is finalized. Publication of accepted works will begin around March. The topics include:
1. The Changing Face of International System: Challenges, Threats, and Opportunities in the Foreign Relations of the Islamic Republic of Iran; by Dr Mohammad Reza Dehshiri
2. United Nations Security Council: Threats and Opportunities for the National Security of the Islamic Republic of Iran; by Dr Yousef Molaee
3. Actions and Policies of the United Arab Emirates Regarding the Three Islands: Challenges and Threats to the National Security of the Islamic Republic of Iran; by Dr Pirouz Mojtahedzadeh
4. Russia: Opportunities, Challenges, and Threats for the National Security of the Islamic Republic of Iran; by Dr Ellaheh Koulaee
5. Status of the Middle East in Geopolitical Thoughts of the 21st Century: Opportunities, Challenges, and Threats for the Islamic Republic of Iran; by Dr Ezzatollah Ezzati

Islamism in the Contemporary World:

The project was approved in mid summer 2003. It aims at examining the Islamist forces, movements, parties and groups throughout the world at the domestic, regional, and international levels. The project looks at this phenomenon within the following geographical categories: the Middle East, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), East Asia, Iran’s eastern and western neighbors (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey), and Africa. It also contains a topical section on international Islamic movements and forces. The project is currently in the stage of data collection.

Soft War:

The project was approved in late spring 2003. It aims at identifying the principles and techniques of soft war. The project comprises three parts: (1) information warfare; (2) psychological warfare; (3) media warfare. It also contains several subsections.

Security Doctrines, Strategies, and Policies in the Modern World:

The project was approved in 2002. The collection of data is at its final stages. The project comprises three parts: 1) principles of formulating a national security doctrine; 2) security theories; 3) national security doctrines of target countries.

Second Phase of DID Digital Library:

The project was approved by TISRI’s Information Systems Department in 2002. The first phase of the project was completed and became operational in February 2002. The second phase was initiated in May 2003 and is in its final stage of completion. It involves the addition of a search engine (simple and advanced) and the portal of Directories, as well as rectifying the first phase problems.
